Insights
The Palsa 75 -project
The year 2022 marked the 75 years since the birth of the Finnish painter Kalervo Palsa. To honour the memory of the eagle of Kittilä, a group of artists created artworks that were unveiled in Palsa's home city, Kittilä in Finnish Lapland, throughout the year.
Pitkänen's work was the last of the artworks of the year, revealed at the anniversary of Palsa's death at his home studio -now a museum- Getsemane. Pitkänen's work, "Untitled", brings together her personal recollections of Palsa's funeral and the close ties Palsa shared with Pitkänen's family.
"I wish to burn with a great flame.
And I burn.
God damnit.
I live.
And my name will remain in history."
- Kalervo Palsa

Pitkänen's bronze sculpture was cast as a unique piece in the summer of 2022. The artist's father, master sculptor Pekka Pitkänen was a part of the sculpting process, offering invaluable insight and guidance throughout the technically very challenging process. The artwork has been exhibited in Palsa museum, Kittilä and Rovaniemi art museum.
Pekka Pitkänen's own bronze memorial sculpture to Palsa, "Burning bush" is located on Palsa's grave in Kittilä graveyard.
